Recent press reports would have
many believe that the House Music scene is dying
a horrible death. Big Clubs such as Cream and Gatecrasher
have moved to monthly events, Ministry of Sound
is in danger of closing due to marked decreases
in numbers attending every week. Magazines moan
the demise of The Superclub and the Big Name DJ.
In fact all these journalists seem to do is moan.
A pity really, because if these Journalists actually
went out, they would realise that what they are
writing is absolute rubbish. The House Scene is
alive and well. The reality is that a new breed
of DJ is emerging and the music that is dominating
the UK Clubs is no-longer the Hard House Trance
sound but rather the Funkier and Deeper Music as
I witnessed on Saturday 30th November when I visited
Penge @ Pacha London.
I arrived at midnight to see the queue stretching
round the block. The same was true for the guestlist
queue. This was no publicity stunt to make the club
look busy, nor was it due to any form of incompetence
by the Door Staff; the club was rammed to the roof.
It was pleasing to notice the Door Staff being fairly
critical of the people trying to gain entrance,
although they were also fair at the same time. The
result was a good mix of people from all backgrounds
partying to some very sexy house music indeed.
What makes a good club in my opinion is a good variety
of clientele and Penge @ Pacha provided this. There
was a good female to male ratio, there were punters
from different House Music scenes, one girl I spoke
with was a Hard House Raver but had come to check
out what all the fuss was about in the Funky House
scene and was happy to admit to me she was having
the time of her life. An early criticism was that
at first the crowd did seem to be a little cliquey,
with groups of friends who obviously knew each other
keeping to themselves and not mixing too much, but
as the night progressed this ceased to be a problem
and everyone started really enjoying themselves.
The venue was beautiful and easily dealt with the
vast amounts of people inside. The toilets were
clean and it was easy to get served quickly at one
of the many bars. The atmosphere was electric in
both rooms and the main dance floor was still extremely
busy at 4:30am.
Jason Lorimer played an absolutely fantastic set
and is one of the best up and coming DJ's in the
country. Hopefully we will hear more of him in the
future.
Penge have held a number of excellent parties
in 2002 and are in my opinion one of the best London
promoters of the year. Saturday at Pacha was one
of their best parties to date. The people, the venue
and the music were top notch. They have certainly
thrown down the gauntlet to the other promoters.
The exciting thing will be to see how they react.
One would hope we will have an exciting 2003 with
many more excellent parties to look forwards too. |
