Sonar By Day is based
in the Centre of Contemporary Culture and the Museum
of Contemporary Art, it presents live music performances,
DJ sets, art installations, film screenings, conferences
and record & technology fairs. Similarities
with Space in Ibiza are easily distinguished, with
it's open aired dance floors, tanned glamorous people,
and an international presence of both DJ's and attendees.
Francois K's set summed up the days events with
a mix of deep, soulful, eclectic grooves played
to a chilled audience and the sweet smell of ganja
smoke.
Sonar By Night presented performances from some
of the biggest names in house and techno, alongside
more avant-garde and electronic musicians. Situated
in a huge NEC type arena, with 3 massive rooms,
sonar by night was a whole different experience,
with nose bleed techno booming out to a sea of gurners
who stomped in military fashion. Watching Mr.Scruff
was the highlight of the nights events, playing
his usually set to a backdrop of his very own animated
characters been projected onto a 40 foot screen.
Sonar has been described as Miami Music Conference
without the Bullshit, but for me there was too much
of this when it came to buying drinks, as you had
to queue for a ticket to buy a drink and then having
to queue again for your drinks. A little over organised,
I think so!
Both the day and night events need to be attended
to achieve the true sonar festival experience, but
at times this was quite hard considering the amount
of hash cakes consumed. With Barcelona been such
an amazing city, you'd find yourself wandering the
streets entranced by the architecture and café
culture, instead of listening to your favourite
DJ's!. Sonar is a true representation of culture
and cosmopolitanism, from the people, to the music,
much like Barcelona itself. |
