Birthdays make me very
excited! As a kid, they were always a big deal and,
with my birthday being in the summer, I’d
have lots of cool kiddy things, like paddling pool
parties and outdoor feasts with pink wafer biscuits,
to look forward to. This year, being my 23rd, things
were not much different. Although there was a distinct
lack of food, I still had a party of all parties
to attend, and this year, I was sharing it with
someone else. Well…something else. A something
known as Bionic.
I’ve been clubbing in Cardiff now for around
5 years, and for 3 of these, Bionic, the birthchild
of Cally & Juice and Brian M, has been steadily
growing to head up the local hard-dance scene. Starting
its infancy in Emporium, one of Cardiff’s
smaller venues, and now (for its third birthday
bash) spreading its wings to fill Club Vision, Wales’
largest and loudest clubbing venue. For this evening,
all the stops were pulled out; with Vision being
turned into a huge, fun-packed over-18s playground.
I was kind of hoping there’d be a nice collection
of party hats and little sausages on sticks to welcome
me. Or even a curly slide to get me from the balcony
to the dance floor in the event of my legs not working
properly (they do this quite a lot – I’m
getting old!) but, in the circumstances, I suppose
there was more than enough on offer!
Every month, Bionic features a ‘6 of the best’
room, showcasing six of the best local bedroom DJs.
Tonight, the 6 of the best 6’s of the best,
gathered in the Titty Twister room to bang out a
bit of the best of everything. The highlight for
many being Ricky Bones who, by the time his set
started, had thrown himself into the party spirit
(not to mention over the floor) a bit too heartily
and forgot what he was doing! Due thanks to DJ Shuffler
for stepping in at just the right moment!!
Besides featuring more than 25 DJS covering a range
of dance styles, Glowgadgets.com, the Pen &
Lolly dance crew, One Love Entertainers (stilt walkers,
fire breathers, freaky people and camp as houses
painted dancers!), and UK-CL were all there to add
to the action; meaning that there really was something
for everybody. I’ve been to a good few Bionics
before, but as far as production goes, this one
certainly shook off the stabilisers! For something
so young, Bionic is already partying far beyond
its years and a shining example of how you don’t
have to be old to be wise! This is a night that
seems to know instinctively how to pull a crowd,
and how to stay one step ahead without throwing
its toys out of the pram. These guys have stuck
to their (toy!) guns all the way and this focus
certainly shows in the final product.
Although my birthday ended with five hours in A
& E (I got something in my eye which wouldn’t
budge and rendered me blind for two days), this
was nothing to do with Bionic and everything to
do with me being childishly drunk!
As for the future, I’m confident Bionic will
reach new heights. It’s already born offspring
of its own in the form of Breathe (Swansea) and
Twisted (Cardiff), and I for one am keen to see
what its got up its sleeve for the coming year.
