I love The Gallery. I really do. I also love to see Paul Oakenfold, so please forgive me if my views on tonight are slightly biased! With Hernan Cattaneo, Marco bailey, Nic Fancuilli and Tom Stephan also on the bill, a great night is surely guaranteed. This is one seriously heavy weight line up!
We arrived just after eleven, to an almost empty club, but with Oaky scheduled for midnight we didn't want to be late. The lack of numbers was only temporary though, as within half an hour the main room was filling up rapidly. I don't know if its just me, but there always seems to be an extra energy or excitement in the air when Oakenfold is playing, and the reception he got was more like that of a film star than a DJ; for once he actually arrived early!
Groups of people were crowded around the DJ box, with a ridiculous amount of cameras flashing in his face. This continued for his whole set, but it didn't bother him one bit, in fact he happily posed in between mixes.
While Oaky plays predominantly trance, it was very different to that played by Armin 2 weeks ago, and I haven't heard anyone else play most of his tunes. The set was excellent, typical Oakenfold, and probably programmed due to a hectic touring schedule. He would play a couple of progressive tunes, followed by something more euphoric, or some tech trance followed by breakbeat or a well known classic.
Old favourites like Lost It.Com's Animal, PPK's Resurrection and his own mix of U2's Beautiful Day were particularly well received.
The atmosphere at The Gallery is always fantastic, the compact size of the main room ensures that everyone is crammed in together, and it seems to add something to the occasion that is often lost at larger venues. There were moments where you just had to stand back and watch, as huge cheers went up amidst a startling light show (anyone who says visuals aren't important should visit The Gallery sometime).
A healthy Argentinian contingent was also in attendance, as they awaited their own superstar, Hernan Cattaneo, and his trademark driving tribal house sound. As Oaky left the DJ booth, autograph hunters and cameras were once more at the ready; I suppose its like that everywhere he goes, just another day in the life of a superstar DJ.
Room 2 also got great reviews, as our mates assured us that Nic Fancuilli's minimal house sound was very well appreciated.
So yet another brilliant Turnmills and Oaky experience had come and gone, but then again, I've still to have a bad one with either. Just wish more clubs were like this. |
