Line Up: Paul Oakenfold, Sister Bliss, Hernan Catteneo, Tall Paul

Quick…quick…. Taxi!!! We had approximately 15 minutes to get to Turnmills before Paul Oakenfold would begin his 2 hour Perfecto set. Oakenfold is always on from midnight till 2 I kept telling my mate; always, always, always. Five to 12….made it just in time…phew! “Oakenfold is on from 4-6 am” someone then informed us. Ahhh….oh well. At least we weren’t late.

It was a good line up tonight, part of the Perfecto tour, with Oaky, Hernan Catteneo, Tall Paul and Sister Bliss all playing the main room.

Upstairs at Turnmills is really busy these days. Its very sociable and a good place to chill out and there are tv’s too. A lot of people go up there for the smoking section, which is insanely busy and hot. We mingled there for a bit, (not that we smoke), had a bit of a giggle, then headed down to the glory that is the main room.

Wow. How busy can a room get? The atmosphere was immense at 4am. It was like a film star had arrived! Countless people were hanging over the booth with cameras flashing ten to the dozen. After witnessing this reaction, it seems that the big boys like, Oaky, Tong, Carl Cox, PVD etc are becoming more popular as time goes on; the legends are growing still!

The main room booth was re-fitted a few months ago, so the crowd are as good as in there with the DJ now. It must be quite an experience for the DJ too. There’s no hiding in there! Oaky always plays to the crowd, which is great to see.

I think this tour is to relaunch Oaky’s Perfecto label and there were many new remixes of old favourites. The first 40 minutes were fantastic,The first tune was a remix of Radiohead’s Everything In it’s Place, which went down very well. Remixes of Grace’s classic Not Over Yet and then Southern Sun followed, both sounding excellent. There was a Chili Pepper’s tune in there too somewhere.

After that first 40 minutes are so, it calmed down a touch, or so I thought, as I later heard that the front of the DJ booth was pulled down in amongst the frolics! The music had a more euphoric tinge to it then what Oaky normally plays.

It picked up again in the last 40 minutes, as Oaky played a few big, if a tad predictable, tunes like PPK’s- Resurrection and Greece 2000. However, when he dropped Universal Nation it was a fine moment indeed! That tune still sounds amazing almost 10 years later, with one of the best kick drums ever!

When Oaky departed at 6am I think it was Tall Paul who came on. I say “think” as it was still very busy and I couldn’t see into the booth easily. The music was now the current popular progy/tech house sound, with tunes such as the supreme Columbian Soul by Mark Knight.

Of course there are a few other rooms to explore at Turnmills, which also looked great, but you just have to go into that main room where the atmosphere is just electric.

But you have to go home sometime, and you know winter is on the way when it is still dark at 6.30 am. Not that I’m complaining! Adios
