I wasn’t sure what to expect at Ministry tonight. Rulin’ is Minsitry’s original and classic party from back in the day, so I was thinking house in the style of a Rampling perhaps; the Box room was labelled “the past”, the Bar “the present” and the Baby Box “the future”. Self explanatory?

Standing outside I felt like I was in Ibiza waiting to get into Amnesia! The glorious British summer had arrived, jackets were not needed and the music was belting out into the starry sky as we queued outside (sigh…how romantic). People were dancing in the queue getting in the mood and it looked to be busy just going with the size of the line waiting to get in.

The mighty Box room was open by the time we were in, so in we went. If you haven’t been to Ministry then you should get down just for this room if nothing else. It has a fantastic sound system that seems very loud but at the same time you can still talk, and also the bass just pounds you from everywhere; you can really feel it. So much for the Past, the music was Now! No old house music, but tech house, progressive house and techno!

First was on the decks was Ted Patterson and I really enjoyed his set. You know the current progressive techy sound like on Toolroom? Well it was that kind of music, and I remember Tocadisco’s Morumbi if that helps give an indication of the tunes. It was brilliant, the room was packed and extremely hot! Do they have air conditioning in there? If not, then they need some! The lasers were now on too, turning this way and that, going straight into the crowd then twisting! Nice. That room has an element of the Main Room at Space about it, but on a smaller scale. Maybe if they got a couple of vertical ic-cannons!

The atmosphere was built up nicely as Jazzy M took over. His first tune went much towards techno instantly, losing a bit of the momentum and mood. Not to worry though, this was just signalling a new direction as it became a full on techno fest! This room was built for music like this; really good bass driven techno, none of that quirky stuff. I remember hearing Lula’s Twilo, which has the most immense bass you will ever hear! “Like we did…. at Twilo”. Brilliant.

There are of course other rooms at Ministry (really? I hear you say!). The Bar room is quite big too, but I’m not a huge fan of it. The bar is just too big! Don’t know if that makes any sense but I feel like I’m in a bar and it’s quite light in there. It was ok tonight, but the music was not in the same class as in the Box. Then again, not everyone likes banging techno so they could get some relief in here! Also, there is the Baby Box at the far end of the club. Quite a small room, maybe get 100-150 people in there, but what a nice little room! Mirror ball city in there! Lots of lights going round and round, you start to spin with it after a while. So I suppose it was apt that Spin Out Records were hosting this room. This was the Future apparently, must be hard to do the Future, as you can only play today’s music…hmmm…Tardis anyone! It was ok in here, some of the guys from their label came down to play, quite a lot of quirky electro sounds going on, before becoming more danceable later on, when I heard Smoke Machine and Angello’s 555! Overall, a good night. Busy, hot and with a variety of music. But it’s really all about that Box room! I do love it.
