Where do you start on a night like this? It’s hard to believe that a DJ can do a gig on this scale. All these years ago when house music was born, I doubt if anyone ever imagined a DJ doing a show like this. The O2 is huge, but tonight was a sell out, with 20,000 coming to see Tiesto.

When we came out of the North Greenwich tube station, the O2 looked great; all lit up with Tiesto’s name in bright lights. Nice venue I thought! It seemed ideal straight away as there was plenty of room for everyone outside and inside, despite the vast number of people.

So, in we went and the trance was already booming out from the massive speakers that were suspended from the ceiling above the stage. There were also another two similar speakers further back as the sound would probably have been lost without them in this cavernous arena. It must have took some organising.

First State were on first as the crowd was getting bigger very quickly. These two guys were loving it! Who wouldn’t! Warming up to a crowd of this size who were already in the party mood. They played nice progressive trance, not too fast or euphoric. All the tunes the whole night sounded so good on that sound system; really punchy and clear. The visuals were stunning too.

As a massive back-drop to the DJ booth, the lighting rig was massive. The picture and scene kept changing, which meant countless photographs were being taken, particularly focusing on the Asian theme. The DJ looked tiny compared with what was behind him. We also got a few small fireworks and massive jets of smoke coming from the stage at appropriate points in the evening.

Tiesto came on at about 11:45 and played for 5 hours in typical style. There was a good variety of tunes and his mixing was excellent. I haven’t heard his new album yet but I assume there were quite a few played from it and of course we got a few favourites such as Fight 643, Suburban Train and Silence. Everyone was just loving it! Plus someone came on with a guitar and sang a little song (forgive me as I don’t know his name!).

The atmosphere was great, the seated area became like a terraced dance floor and it was funny to look over and see all these people jumping around in the seats! Quite a sight. There was energy and excitement in abundance; the music upbeat and uplifting. It made for a very happy environment and nobody left early.

When Tiesto played his last tune at 4.30, the crowd looked just as vast as it had done hours earlier. There was a run of about an hour of euphoric trance tunes from about 3am. You know the type of tunes with the huge breakdowns and build ups? Then he stopped the music and we got a remix of Rui Da Silva’s Touch Me! Lovely. This was swiftly followed by a remix of Your Loving Arms. These slower more chilled out trance numbers sounded fantastic on that sound system. Then the big finale! His own remix of Adagio For Strings.

I love this tune and so did everyone else as it started to snow! Well, not really, but the masses of white tape that fell from the ceiling certainly gave that impression. Great stuff! Then he was gone…a quick walk in front of the booth, tossing his headphones in to the crowd and he was off.

I just wonder how these gigs affect Tiesto now. He does a lot of massive gigs, including his Monday night residency at Privilege in Ibiza. I wonder if these gigs are just normal for him now, even though it was such a huge crowd? He is a seriously huge DJ, as big as it gets.

Anyway, there was more to come. Airbase came on to close the night, but how do you follow that! As he walked on stage there were still about 20,000 pairs of hands in the air. He must’ve been quite happy! More trance followed, but we were now going to head for home as the legs decided that it was time.

Can’t fault the night at all. We had a great time, as did everyone else. Apparently, trance is dead in this country! Not on tonight’s showing, and I have 20,000 witnesses who would agree with me. It’s just a pity all nights out weren’t like this.
