Details: Back To Love has long been one of the most highly anticipated Kandi chronicles and this, their ninth volume, is a veritable masterclass in truly classic house. An institution with house music connoisseurs, it charts the very best party tracks that gave birth to a whole generation of clubbing. The 2007 edition continues with the second instalment of memories from early to mid-1990s clubland.
Also, notably, this latest album marks an artistic progression as the return of Jason Brooks really comes into its own. Back on board with a renewed vigour the original illustrator has penned one of the most stunning and bold covers to date marking a new era for the ever-stylish, ever-evolving lifestyle brand. Glistening in its colourful new sleeve, this year’s Back To Love contrasts the very edge of fashion with a nod in the direction of classic Back To Love B-Girl styling. It’s bold, it’s bright and simply very cool… the perfect match for the exquisite sounds housed inside.
CD1 kicks off with a dramatic gospel lead slice of praise house - the incredibly rare and previously unreleased Todd Terry mix of Martha Wash’s ‘Carry On’. Followed straight away by Dajae who blasts her way through another rarity, ‘U Got Me Up’, with the one and only Danny Tenaglia on mix duties. Masters At Work deliver the next two cuts ‘I Can’t Get No Sleep’ and River Ocean’s ‘Love and Happiness’ – arguably two of the finest records they ever produced. The raucously brilliant ‘Everybody be Somebody’ makes a welcome appearance and will have clubbers old and new racing to the dancefloor. S.O.U.L.S.Y.S.T.E.M deliver a slice of pure 90s nostalgia with ‘It’s Gonna Be a Lovely Day’ whilst Shawn Christopher’s ‘Don’t Lose The Magic’ offers more disco excellence for a truly splendid trip down memory lane. Rounded off in fine style with a slice of pure melancholic house bliss from Mood II Swing.
CD2 continues with some more classic moments that defined a generation of hedonists. Fire Island open with their take on Machine’s 1979 classic ‘There But For The Grace Of God’, a timely choice of cover by Terry Farley and Pete Heller that embodies the all inclusive together as one mood of the time, when house music unified people from all walks of life. It continues with gems including Hardrive’s ‘Deep Inside’ and Frankie Knuckles presents Satoshi Tomiie with the unforgettable ‘Tears’ and the blisteringly brilliant ‘Let’s Groove’ from George Morel. In fact it’s blinder after blinder as Lisa Marie Experience takes centre stage with the anthemic ‘Keep On Jumpin’. Controversially, Underworld make an appearance with ‘Born Slippy’ which, whilst not your traditional Back To Love track, is clearly deserving of a place in the series. The album finishes up with a couple of throwbacks that were previously unavailable for inclusion. Orbital’s seminal ‘Chime’ from 1990 and SSR’s ‘To Be House’ an early italo record loosely based on Mr Fingers’ Can You Feel It. A fitting conclusion to what we hope you all agree is another fabulous edition in the series.
Packed with more hard-to-find, much-loved but lately forgotten songs this year’s album is most definitely worthy of the soubriquet true club classics! www.hedkandi.com
