Details: Hed Kandi’s sassy kid sister, Stereo Sushi, returns to action with their 11th mouth-watering outing, revealing the super soulful and deliciously deep outer-reaches of the Kandi sound. Dishing up the crème de la crème of subaqueous grooves, these are the perfect provisions for those who like the classier side of life, deftly spread across two tasty unmixed CDs.
Michelle Weeks opens proceedings, with a pulsating piano groove that sets Sushi’s stall out with aplomb. Byron Stingly’s velvet vocal comes to the fore on El’s ‘Knockin’ before the angular funk stylings of Noferini introduces the unmistakable power of Jocelyn Brown on ‘I Don’t Want You’. Ananda Project’s ‘Stalk You’ comes on Kandi coated with a silky string arrangement and seductive lyrics, before the slick soul of Terry Hunter, the bouncing grooves of Fanatix featuring Don E and the propulsive guitar of Mark Grant’s ‘Guessing Again’ take things to the heart of the dance floor. CD 1 closes with a run of superlative cuts from Elektro Organic with Revolutions, Groove Invaders ‘Keep Rising’, Belezamusica’s cover of Odyssey’s ‘Inside Out’ and Marc Evan’s impassioned ‘Given Me Joy’.
The jacking, off beat rhythms of Quentin Harris’s ‘You Don’t Know’ launches CD2 in style and is deftly pursued by Soul Central’s throbbing ‘Time After Time’. Mood II Swing’s absorbing R’n’B-tinged picks up the pace, as The Sushi crew indulge themselves in a marathon of blissfully hypnotic grooves. Kandi favourite DJ Spen ably assisted by the Muthafunkers proves ‘It’s So Easy’ whilst the legendary Dennis Ferrer featuring chanteuse Mia Tuttavill get atmospheric with ‘Touched The Sky’. Jon Silva’s mix of Roland Clark’s ‘Deep In House’ adds a classy touch of funk before the Don-like Ashley Beedle wraps it all up with his classic horn powered retooling of Blaze’s ‘Breathe’.
With their monthly residency at Pacha gathering speed Stereo Sushi’s effortlessly cool vibes continue to make waves in all the right places.
