Details: In a world of constant change, Hed Kandi possesses a reassuringly uncanny ability to hit the spot time and again. Twisted Disco, the label’s second release of 2008 does just that. Revealing a more mischievous and slightly darker, late night hue to the Hed Kandi sound, Twisted Disco packs an edgier punch, reaching out to the future - as Jason Brooks’ latest cover illustration featuring his first ever rendering of a disco-automaton amply demonstrates - exploring the extremities of the party sound with a selection of full length, unmixed intergalactic groovers.
CD1 abounds with the haut monde of the harder edge of House music. The filtered introduction courtesy of Dirty South drops into an acoustic interlude that lulls you into traditional Hed Kandi territory until the pounding riffs confirm this is truly Twisted Disco. Terri B’s super-soulful vocal coats the peaking bass of Maverick & Tapesh’s ‘Rise!’ Static Revenger’s nod to hardcore with ‘Everything Is Beautiful’ and Utah Saints’ stone cold classic ‘Something Good’ retooled by Hed Kandi favourite Ian Carey all set the mood for dance-floor devastation. Hed Kandi’s own Brad Hed gets the Vandalism treatment on ‘The Girlz & Boyz’ and Tuetonic wünderkind Eddie Theonick returns with Berget Lewis once again on ‘Forgiveness’. ‘Shine On Me’ by Tikaro, J. Louis & Ferran Feat. Clarence gets a snare roll rinsing retouch thanks to Abel Y Raul who add extra hypnotic bass roll for good measure and Mathew Deekay gets his mitts on Junkie XL’s thunderous ‘More’ before Greg, Jeroenski & Roog’s ‘Your Mind Is Twisted’, Axwell & Sebastian Ingrosso Vs Salem Al Fakir’s ‘It's True’ and Spit’s ‘Falling’ keep things rocking until Sébastien Léger’s remix of Ida Engberg ‘Disco Volante’ adds filthy pinball arcade riffs to bring the first CD to a close.
Twisted Disco’s second CD really pushes the envelope featuring some slightly unfamiliar names to the Kandi faithful, stripped back by some Kandi favourites. Opening with glitched vibes that transform into Splittr’s anthemic ‘All Alone’ and the Jay Men’s cheeky reworking of a classic on ‘Ohh La Lishious’ following hard on its heels, the first curveball comes from undisputed heavyweight of grime Dizzee Rascal, whose recent Flex single gets a dance floor work-out from Dave Spoon. The antipodean electro frontline get in on the act with a Bass Kleph remix of Alex Romano and Hook N Sling adding a fearsome four-to-the-floor edge to The Stanton Warriors party-breaks fare. The über-cool Deadmau5 makes a typically epic contribution as Sandy Riviera cranks it back with throbbing aplomb leading into ‘Walking Down The Street’, a moment of Ron Carroll genius that shows just why he’s a bona-fide legend. Another cheeky cover version in the form of Peter Gelderblom Vs Dan Parker’s take on Colonel Abraham’s ‘Trapped’ adds a familiar feel to proceedings, with Sgt Slick & Pitch Dark Feat. Abigail Bailey, Arno Cost & Norman Doray and super- Swede John Dahlback building things up to the epic crescendo that is Gui Boratto’s ‘Beautiful Life’. Undoubtedly, one of the coolest records of the moment!
This coming month will see some deliciously decadent Hed Kandi events including Pacha on 23rd February replete with Robot mannequins and dancing robot girls and all the Kandi trimmings and a free Twisted Disco event, held sometime in February at a top secret location, access will be granted to all those in robot chic, so get ready for some intergalactic robot fun at the Twisted Disco.
