Details: The pair set to work in Marco’s studio up in the Scottish mountains, a region where angelic choirs from the 1950s often ride atop intricate beats, and aching vocal harmonies hold hands with childlike choruses. “Too many bands try and be all dark and cool,” says Barry. “We like happy melodies and want to represent something fun.”
The meeting of these two musical minds came about as a result of a truly cosmic interlude. Barry was walking his dog on a pleasant summer's day and came across Marco playing his guitar in his garden. A few cups of tea later and with a shared love of 50s exotica, The Beach Boys, Les Baxter, Lemon Jelly, DJ Shadow and the Beta Band, they knew that something magical was happening: The Rainbow Family was born.
It helped a lot having a studio nestling amidst the Scottish highlands: “It’s such an amazing setting, and out of that come the harmonies that you hear on tracks like ‘I Can See A Rainbow,’” says Marco. Title track, ‘This Is Not A Circular,’ defines the album and the thinking behind Rainbow Family: “There’s no point in pretending we’re dark and moody,” says Barry. “We want to play around with interesting melodies and create something to make people happy. Oh, and when we were making the album there were an awful lot of letters coming through the letterbox bearing the same title.” Taking local shop Barbara B as inspiration, Barry created the nostalgic ‘Barbara Bach’: “It’s just around the corner from my girlfriend’s house. I was walking past the shop one day and started thinking about Ringo Starr’s wife. It’s as simple as that.” ‘Baxter’s Revenge,’ complete with its lush strings and bubbling electronica, pays homage to Rainbow Family icon, Les Baxter: “He was a composer from the 60s and 70s who made exotica music and we wanted to create something of that essence,” says Marco. ‘From The Heart’ is a personal favourite of Barry’s, taking influences from the Beach Boys’ album ‘Smile’ and working them into a down-beat love song wrapped around a delicate melody. |
