3 Beat Records Reaches 18 Year Milestone!: 16.10.07

Liverpool’s influential record shop 3 Beat Records celebrates 18 years in the music business in November. Founded by Jon Barlow in 1989, 3 Beat Records has consistently maintained its position as one of the UK’s leading retail outlets for new dance music and counts the world’s biggest DJ names as regular customers.

In 1989, house music was becoming the soundtrack for an entire generation. The raves and parties attracted huge crowds, but finding somewhere to buy the music was difficult. Jon Barlow founded 3 Beat while still a student and it rapidly became the focal point of dance music culture in Liverpool and the North West.

3 Beat became the place to find new music and was often the first retail outlet in the UK to bring the latest house music from Chicago, Italy and New York into the country. All the big name DJs, Pete Tong, Sasha, Paul Oakenfold, Judge Jules and more, shopped there religiously using the world famous 3 Beat mail order service. The business rapidly boomed, leading to the birth of the 3 Beat record label and the now legendary G-Love club night (set up with scouse legend John Kelly).

Jon Barlow comments,
“Dance music culture has come a long way since we first opened our doors, however 3 Beat remains as relevant as it ever was, if not more so. In fact, with the launch of 3 Beat digital we are now a global retail business. I am immensely proud of the fact that we are still an influential force within dance music and have to pay credit to the fantastic team of people who have worked at 3 Beat over the years, all of whom have made an immeasurable contribution to the fact that we are still here to celebrate 18 years.”

To mark the occasion, on Saturday November 10th, the 3 Beat team are putting on a very special party at the Carling Academy in Liverpool, that will reflect the history and legacy of the 3 Beat name. The party is called “Back To The Old ‘Pool” and flying to Liverpool to headline is the godfather of house, Marshall Jefferson with a PA from house legend, Ce Ce Rogers.
